Comment on FR Doc # 2013-02584

I am writing to comment on the new standards that are being proposed regarding all foods sold in schools. I am a teacher in the North Carolina public school system, but I am also a parent.

I give you that information to preface my statements. As a teacher and as a parent, these new proposed rules are ridiculous. It is fine to educate students about the importance of making good decisions, but it is ridiculous to take regulations and mandates this far. It is a parent's responsibility to help their children decide how to make good decisions in life. It should not be the government's role to tell us how to live our lives. Surely, some decisions should still be our own. If I want to give my daughters some money to purchase ice cream at lunch, I should be able to do that.

Changing the rules regarding calories in school lunches is on a whole other level from these new regulations. These proposed changes mean students can run concession stands at school events that sell soda and popcorn. Where are we, Soviet Russia? My goodness, I don't need to government to delve this far into my life and the lives of my children.

I believe that the government is asking for a huge backlash from those who already believe that the government's roles in our lives is already too large.
