Re: Docket no APHIS-2006-0024
The Feline Conservation Federation is a national organization that believes in the
ownership and commerce of wild felines. The Feline Conservation Federation has
over 50 years experience in educating its members in the husbandry of exotic
felines. We strongly oppose a minimum age requirement for transport of exotic or
wild animals. APHIS states the purpose of this proposal is “help ensure the
humane treatment of these animals.” We do not see evidence to support this
claim. We request that APHIS withdraw this proposal.
The Feline Conservation Federation feels that this proposal is not well founded.
We believe that there is proper merit or evidence to support this proposal. We feel
this proposal would have a negative impact on feline conservation, husbandry and
education. These are all items the Feline Conservation members have participated
in and will continue to be a part of in the future. The current rule for dogs and cats
represents a normal weaning standard. Exotic felines are typically bottle fed by a
surrogate mother. This rule would have an inhumane impact on felines that need to
bond with the new caretaker. This proposal would have a significant impact on the
feline trade and industry standards of husbandry based off of inadequate analysis.
We respectfully request that you withdraw this proposal.
Sincerely,
Evelyn Shaw
