I am concerned about wildlife, the ecosystem and human health. America dumps an estimated 80 million pounds of Atrazine on our crops yearly. This over-sprayed pesticides runs-off into the ecosystem, filters into our drinking water, and leaks into our food. I am writing to voice my support for banning this harmful herbicide.
Atrazine has been under serious scrutiny over the past several years as an abundance of scientific literature on its harmful effects have been published by scientists at the USGS, the University of California, Berkeley and the University of South Florida.
Atrazine is a potential endocrine disruptor that can turn male frogs into females at concentrations as low as 2.5 parts per billion. The chemical has been linked to reproductive defects in fish, prostate and breast cancer in laboratory rodents, and epidemiological studies suggest it is carcinogenic to humans.
I hope you will support the removal of Atrazine use. The European Union banned the harmful pesticide in 2004, and now it’s time to place a federal ban on Atrazine use in the United States. This action will improve ecological health, while making our food and water safer for generations to come.
