Standards of Identity for Pisco and Cognac

Docket ID: TTB-2012-0001
Agency: Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB)
Parent Agency: Department of the Treasury (TREAS)
In this notice, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) proposed to amend its regulations setting forth the standards of identity for distilled spirits to include Pisco as a type of brandy that must be manufactured in accordance with the laws and regulations of either Peru or Chile governing the manufacture of these products. This change will clarify the TTB distilled spirits regulations to better reflect the provisions of the United States-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement and the United States-Chile Free Trade Agreement. This notice also includes a technical correction to remove "Cognac" and "Pisco brandy" from the list of examples of geographic designations in the distilled spirits standards of identity. Both of these changes will provide greater clarity in distilled spirits labeling.
