My suggestion is that all F/Os engaged in FAR Pt 121 Operations should be required to hold a type rating for the aircraft which they are assigned to fly.
Type ratings can be obtained on a Commercial Cert. (or Pvt for that matter), but are all tested to the ATP proficiency level. This solution eliminates the need to obtain 1500 Hrs & ATP Cert, but still ensures that a satisfactory level of proficiency is obtained and demonstrated. (Most U.S. Airlines currently use Rated F/Os in int'l opns). My current Pt 135 employer (and many others) type rate all F/Os on their assigned aircraft. This would require Regional Airlines to provide adequate training for their new F/Os. (Ret. TWA/AA Check Airman)
