Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Accessibility Guidelines for Shared Use Paths

Docket ID: ATBCB-2011-0002
Agency: Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (ATBCB)
This rulemaking would establish accessibility guidelines for shared use paths that are designed for bicyclists and pedestrians and are used for transportation and recreation purposes. This rulemaking is merged with the rulemaking in RIN 3014-AA26 that would establish accessibility guidelines for pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way. A second notice of proposed rulemaking (Second NPRM) in RIN 3014-AA26 would propose to add provisions for shared use paths to the accessibility guidelines for pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way. The U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Department of Transportation, and other Federal agencies are expected to adopt the accessibility guidelines for pedestrian facilities in the public right-of-way as enforceable standards in separate rulemakings for the construction and alteration of facilities covered by the Americans With Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and the Architectural Barriers Act.
