A petition to list the great hammerhead shark as threatened or endangered under the ESA was received in December 2012. A second petition to list the great hammerhead shark range-wide, or, alternatively, the Northwest Atlantic population as threatened under the ESA was received in March 2013. Initial response is for NMFS to make a 90-day finding to determine if the petitions present substantial scientific or commercial information indicating that the petitioned action may be warranted. If so, then a status review is conducted, which leads to a 12-month finding of either not warranted or warranted. If warranted, a proposed listing rule is published, which may lead to a final listing rule.
